big day out there? lets get you cleaned up.

built out of necessity. Cold-process bars made for skin that's seen some weather.

the story

Good Sort started the same way a lot of good things do — in a workshop, out of necessity, curiosity, and a fair bit of trial and error.

After long days outside I couldn’t find a bar I actually enjoyed using, so I started making my own with surplus avocado oil from our orchard.

First for my family. Then for friends. Then for friends of friends.

The idea was simple: make soap that leaves you feeling as invigorated as a day in the bush, the surf, or the hills — with crisp, nostalgic scents of the outdoors.

Today every bar is still cut, cured, and packed by hand in small batches.

No shortcuts. No artificial nonsense.

Just better bars for the daily cleanup.

what goes into a good bar?

ingredients philosophy

We don’t load our bars with cheap detergents or artificial fragrance.

Every ingredient earns its place.

Avocado, olive, coconut, sunflower, and shea — rich, skin-feeding oils for skin that’s seen some weather.

Finished with essential oils that bring a crisp, nostalgic hit of the outdoors into your shower.

No palm oil.

No shortcuts.

No nonsense.

Cold-processed in small batches and cured slowly for a hard-wearing bar that stands up to real days outside.

  • Finally a bar I get stoked on using after a big day in the hills. Lasts a solid 3-4 weeks with daily use. Alpine Mist is nice! Rugged yet refined.

    -Kyle, Wanaka

  • Gives peace of mind knowing i'm putting only natural ingredients on my skin. Especially after a few hours out in the salt.

    -Aiden, Waihi Beach

  • Love the scents, Bay Rum is my favorite. Sweet, spicy, and complex. One in the shower and the whole bathroom smells good.

    -Hazel, Coromandel

  • I've always been a bar soap guy, but this one's on another level. Feels great on the skin and smells amazing. First bar I actually look forward to using.

Bar care and useful info

Good sort guide

what is the deal with cold-process anyway ?

We start with real oils and butters — olive, avocado, coconut, shea and the rest. They’re blended with a simple alkaline solution and left to do what they’ve always done: turn into soap.

Then we wait.

Over several weeks the bars cure slowly, harden properly, and develop that rich, creamy lather. During that process natural glycerin forms and stays right where it belongs. It’s a humectant that helps draw moisture to your skin — something industrial soap often removes and sells separately.

No synthetic detergents. No rushed production. Just proper soap, made the slow way.

We’re not in a hurry.

how long does a bar last ?

With daily use, you’ll usually get 3–4 weeks out of a bar when it's kept on a well-drained soap dish and allowed to dry properly between scrub-downs.

any good for sensitive skin ?

In our experience, yes. Our own family uses these bars daily — including sensitive skin and mild eczema — and we’ve seen far fewer flare-ups since switching. The simple blend of natural oils and essential oils keeps skin feeling clean, hydrated, and comfortable after long days outside.

Everyone’s skin is different, but we make our bars as gentle and balanced as possible.

what about shipping ?

We ship across New Zealand with simple flat-rate delivery.

North Island: $7

South Island: $9

All orders are packed in our orchard workshop and dispatched within 1–2 business days.

We also ship to Australia at a flat rate.

Nice one.

how do i get the most out of my bar ?

Let it breathe. After each shower, leave your bar somewhere it can drain and dry. A good wooden or ceramic dish with holes or deep grooves is ideal — sitting in water is how good soap dies young.

Keep it out of the splash zone. You don’t need to soak it. Quick wet, lather up, back on the dish.

Rotate if you’ve got more than one on the go. Dry bars last longer. Way longer.
